DNS records tell the internet where to find the things that use your domain: which server runs your website, where your email arrives, and which services are allowed to act for you. You change them on the DNS tab of your domain's page in My CamCore, under DNS records.
DNS records can be changed there only while CamCore keeps the domain's DNS. If another provider keeps it, change the records with that provider. See Nameservers and CamCore DNS.
Each part of a record
| Part | What it means |
|---|---|
| Type | What kind of record it is. See the table below. |
| Name | The address the record is for. Leave it blank for the domain itself, or enter a full name such as www.yourdomain.com.au for a subdomain. |
| Content | Where the name points, or the text the record holds. |
| TTL | Time to live: how long other servers may remember the record before checking again. One hour suits most records. Choose 5 minutes a day before a planned change so it takes effect quickly. |
| Priority | For MX and SRV records only. The lower number is tried first. |
Record types
| Type | Use it for | Content looks like |
|---|---|---|
| A | Pointing a name at a server's IPv4 address, usually a website. | The IPv4 address your web host gives you. |
| AAAA | The same, for an IPv6 address. | The IPv6 address your web host gives you. |
| CNAME | Making one name an alias of another, such as www pointing at your site builder. Not allowed on the domain itself. | Another host name, such as sites.example.com |
| ALIAS | Like a CNAME, but allowed on the domain itself. | Another host name. |
| MX | Where email for the domain is delivered. | Your mail provider's mail server, with a priority. |
| TXT | Text that proves ownership or sets email rules, such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC. | v=spf1 include:example.com ~all |
| SRV | Locating a specific service, such as some phone or chat systems. | Weight, port and target, such as 10 5060 sip.example.com, with a priority. |
| CAA | Which certificate authorities may issue SSL certificates for the domain. | 0 issue "letsencrypt.org" |
| NS | Handing a subdomain to other nameservers. | A nameserver's name. |
Add, edit or remove a record
- Add: fill in Type, Name, Content and TTL under the table and choose Add record.
- Edit: choose Edit on the record, change it in the form, and choose Save record.
- Remove: choose Remove on the record and confirm.
The SOA record and the domain's own NS records show Keeps the domain working and can't be changed here: they come from the nameservers.
Common set-ups
- A website: an A record for the domain and a CNAME for www, using the details your web host gives you.
- Email: the MX and TXT records your email provider lists. CamCore email and Microsoft 365 show the records they need on their own service page in My CamCore.
- Proving ownership: a TXT record with the text the service gives you. It can usually be removed once the service has checked it.
If something stops working
Changes can take up to an hour, and occasionally up to 48 hours, to reach everyone. If a site or email still doesn't work after that, check the record against what your provider asked for, or contact CamCore Support with the domain name in Reference.
