Recovering an expired domain

An expired domain isn't lost straight away. It goes through stages before the registry deletes it, and in most of them it can still be renewed or restored. The sooner you act, the cheaper and simpler it is.

Check where your domain is up to

Open camcore.au/domains/recovery and enter the domain. The result says which stage it is at and what to do next. The same check is on the WHOIS lookup: see Looking up who holds a domain.

The stages

StageTypical lengthWhat you can do
ExpiredFrom the expiry dateThe website and email stop working. Renew it.
Grace periodAbout 30 daysRenew at the normal price. Everything comes back as it was.
Redemption periodAbout 30 days moreRestore it, for a recovery fee on top of the renewal.
Pending deletionAbout 5 daysNothing: it can no longer be restored.
Deleted—The name is released and anyone can register it.

Times vary by ending; these are typical for .com, .net and .org.

.au domains work differently: a .au domain can be renewed at its normal price for about 30 days after it expires. There is no redemption period and no recovery fee. After that it is deleted.

Recovery fees

For a domain in its redemption period, the recovery fee is $131.96 for .com, $133.65 for .net and $133.99 for .org, on top of the renewal. For any other ending CamCore Support confirms the fee before you agree to it. These are set out in the Hosting Terms of Service.

If your domain is with CamCore

  1. Sign in to My CamCore and open Billing & Domains.
  2. Find the domain under Your domain names. An expired domain shows Renew; one in its redemption period shows Restore. It also appears under Needs attention.
  3. Choose it. CamCore Billing opens the renewals checkout, already signed in, with the price for that stage.
  4. Pay. CamCore renews or restores the domain with the registry, and you get an email when it is done.

If the restore can't be completed automatically, CamCore Support finishes it and contacts you.

If your domain is with another provider

Contact them straight away: only the registrar it is with can renew or restore it. An expired domain can't be transferred, so renew it there first, then move it to CamCore if you want to. See Transfer lock and transfer codes.

If it has been deleted

Search for the name on CamCore Domains. If no one has registered it, register it again. If someone has, the WHOIS lookup shows who it is with now.
